Better than a spanking?

Yesterday, I was on my way to pick up Addison from her school.  I stopped by the house first to drop off my stuff.  As I was pulling out of the driveway, I saw our neighbor kid walking the street with this sign on…

I laughed so hard at first, I could hardly believe it.  What could he have done???  I went to pick up Addison.  When I came home, the poor kid was still out, walking the neighborhood.  I had to stop and talk to him.  Turns out, he was “talkin’ when the teacher was teachin.”  Really?  I had conjured up all types of scenarios and none of them were as boring as his actual story.

I don’t know the back story here.  Maybe this was the last straw after many, many warnings.  Maybe his dad just wanted him out of the house.  Who knows.  He was told to walk from corner to corner until 6pm!  (I picked Addison up at 4:15.)  Is this effective discipline?  As a teacher, I have had parents take away TV for an entire week because their child was talking one day.  By Friday, they don’t remember why they haven’t been able to watch TV since Monday.  In that case, I think bot the parents and the child were ‘punished.’  In this situation, the boy across the street made a bad choice and was punished that night.  I can guarentee he won’t be talking in class today.

What do you think?
